Evergreen CC Signs Lease, Plans to Open Dedicated Curling Facility in October 2012

On Tuesday, July 3  2012, we signed a lease for an industrial building in Beaverton, OR where we plan to establish the first dedicated curling rink in Oregon and only the second dedicated curling rink on the U.S. west coast.

Evergreen CC’s new address will be 10950 SW Fifth St., Beaverton, OR  97005

See below for a few photos of the building, including its interior and a photoshop composite showing what it might look like with curling ice.

A little more than one year ago we started the Dedicated Ice in a Year (DIY) project, and pushed hard to get to this point.   We made a direct appeal to our members, and a U.S. mail appeal to curlers across the U.S.A..   We ran a bake sale and yard sale at Keith Lafortune’s house, cheered Jim Smoltz into his spandex for a Van Halen tribute concert, sweepstaked a fabulous trip to Puerto Vallarta, qualified for a WCF Building Loan, received a loan from Ethan Bradford, received a grant from Nike Corporation, received lockers from Forest Grove High School, and best of all, we curled and curled our way to financial viability.

During that time we also toured dozens of viable buildings in Portland, Vancouver, Hillsboro, Beaverton, Tigard, Tualatin, Milwaukie, Clackamas, and Gresham.   We made written offers on several buildings and nearly signed a lease for a building in Hillsboro.    Starting in March 2012, we aimed for the Beaverton location, and through lengthy negotiations secured a deal that will give us a viable home for up to 15 years with a well-regarded landlord, Harsch Investment Properties.

Now, the real fun starts as we transition into our design and construction phase.   We recently partnered with CIDA architects who will help guide us through the permitting and construction process while saving time and money.   Next we will partner with Jim Hibbard to purchase and install a chiller and related ice making equipment.   We will take the keys to our new space on August 1, and begin construction soon thereafter.   We intend to minimize the building changes in the first year so that we can stay within our limited budget and aggressive timeline.

We will maintain 3 sheets of wonderful curling ice for use by our members and guests 7 days a week during Fall, Winter and Spring.   We will run leagues throughout the week, hold bonspiels throughout the year and run a junior program on Saturdays.   We have already received inquiries from MoPac to hold playdowns for club nationals, and the California clubs are interested in holding their PIC qualifiers at the new facility.

We plan to start making ice at the beginning of October and open the facility on October 19, precisely 10 years after the very first Evergreen CC open house which occurred at Mountain View Ice Arena on October 19, 2012.

What a trip it has been, and what fun we will have in our new home.    We look forward to enjoying great competition with a fun group while welcoming all to enjoy the noblest of all sports, the Olympic sport of curling.
