Opening Night

We did it!   The water is frozen, the rings are laid, the lines are buried in the ice.   After two years of searching, planning, raising, negotiating, budgeting, building, cleaning, painting, worrying, flooding, scraping and decorating Evergreen CC is ready to enter its new phase of Dedicated Ice.

Tonight we open with a members-only party at 6:30pm.    Nothing fancy, just a chance for everybody to get together and celebrate our new home.   I can’t wait to see all of Evergreen’s curlers together again.   It’ll be great to see some new faces too, membership is really taking off.

These last two weeks have been hard on the nerves.   Would we be legal?  Would we have a Certificate of Occupancy?  Then on Monday the contractors called for final inspection, and the City of Beaverton examined everything.   Any kind of inspection can go bad, and we prepared for the worst.    But for once the sun shone brightly, and the inspectors came away satisfied with the great work done by Pacific Crest Structures, their sub-contractors and Jim Hibbard.   Beaverton approved our occupancy.

Would the water freeze?   It took 3 days for the initial flood to freeze, and then Peren Bjork, ECC head icemaker, worked quickly through a steep learning curve to understand the dynamics of our unique ice floor.   We found that the design of our floor has issues that we will need to correct next summer, but for now Peren (with help from Wayne, Scott, Jim and others) has done amazingly well to build a beautiful sheet of ice for curling.   We’re confident that the ice will be playable and fun.   This year we will gain experience and then we will make it better every year.

What’s next?   Fun and games!   Tonight we throw the first stone.   Tomorrow we will hold an in-house fun spiel.    Leagues begin on Sunday.   Our first learn-to-curl happens Monday.   The junior curlers will hit the ice on Tuesday, and on Friday we will host the best curlers in California who will spend a weekend deciding which of them will represent California at the prestigious Pacific International Cup.    Grand Opening on January 5th.   MoPac Playdowns starting in January.   Amazing.     We’re on our way.
